Moving To Vernon With A Dog?

Moving with a dog?

I’m a dog lover, and chances are if you’re reading this, you are too!

A dog can be the best companion. Dogs get us moving, socializing, laughing, loving and are a big part of any family. Especially when considering a change in where you live.

If you’re new to the North Okanagan, or considering moving to the area with a dog, here’s a quick resource list to get your dog, and maybe you, to be a little more social.

Dog Parks

Vernon has some fantastic off-leash dog parks – two of my favourites are East Hill, a smaller park but completely fenced with upgrades just done.  To get there, head up 43rd Avenue, and turn right onto Mutrie Road. You can’t miss it!

Mission Hill Park at 3900 15th Avenue – a big, beautiful grassy park, with a fenced-around play area for kids!

Another popular off-leash area is BX Park, located on 46thAvenue, off of Pleasant Valley Road. It has a huge open area, and a

very welcoming creek for your dogs at the back, on a hot summer’s day! There are many other parks to try out too – here’s a link for you to check them out if you like from Tourism Vernon.

The North Okanagan has many lakes and where you can and cannot have pets is a bit of a puzzle. Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park (Parking lot at the end of Kidston Rad, then a 10 minute on-leash walk to the beach) and Ellison Provincial Park (park in day use lot, on-leash walk through the campground, then a 5 minute walk! to the beach) are two of our favorite pet beaches.

Just Passing Through?

If you are only passing through we have many pet-friendly hotels, motels and cabins too! Here’s a link to Pet Friendly Accommodation, but of course, best to check with each establishment first.

If you need to get some bonding time and want to have some fun with your pooch try Dog’o’Pogo Dog Agility. They work on agility and training techniques for all breeds and levels of experience. It may be right up your alley.

I hope you enjoyed these tidbits of information. Happy trails!
